TIGEREYE'S MANAGER

MINJOO DO

Minjoo Do is the co-founder of Tigereye TaeKwonDo and holds a 2nd-degree black belt. She has a B.A. in graphic design from Corcoran School of the Arts in Washington, D.C. and worked as an exhibition designer. In 2000, she married Grand Master Han Do and runs Tigereye's summer camps and the before and after school care programs. She enjoys playing with kids, art, and exploring science. "All kids have different characters and personalities," she says. “I always try to communicate with children at their own levels. I think it helps create positive relationships between me and the children as well as their parents who have entrusted me with the care of their children.”

THE ROLE OF STUDENTS

ALL STARS

Tigereye's All Stars Demo Team is a creative expression of Taekwondo. The 2018-19 All Stars Demo Team is made up of 23 students aging from 5 and above.  To condition their bodies into a high level of performance, all All Stars members dedicate themselves to hours of training every week.  They love to challenge and motivate our dojang students to train harder and appreciate the tradition of martial arts. The All Stars members display Taekwondo techniques such as basic movements, poomsae, sparring, self-defense, breaking, and special creative combinations to music. Demos have been called to perform at local schools, communities, and even the National Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Our “CAN DO” attitude serves as a symbol of our hard work and dedication, and we are proud to share our knowledge and energy with our community.

Master Do does not run his dojang like basic training, the kids all wear lots of padding during sparring (sometimes you can't even tell which one is your kid because the of the padding) and focuses a lot on developing focus, discipline and respect. Master Do has a masters in child psychology and I think it informs his approach to training children. He runs his dojang to teach kids focus through fighting, discipline through defense, and respect through ritual (there is a lot of bowing and hand shaking before and after class and sparring). My son's manners have improved, he didn't whine much to begin with but he whines less now, he can sit still longer than he used to, etc. I am not thrilled about black belt "grade inflation" (it seems to be everywhere) but if awarding black belts to younger kids helps in achieving these sort of positive results for kids, then I can live with the "grade inflation" that has occurred over the last 30 years.
